The verdict

Who's travelling?

Pick a traveller type to re-weight the scores and re-rank the rooms around what you actually care about.

Read it your way

JEN Beijing by Shangri-La is a contemporary hotel situated in the heart of Beijing's central business district. It stands out for its well-maintained bathrooms with Toto washlets, an expansive multi-story gym, and proximity to local transit. However, standard rooms start at a snug 260 square feet, and some guests report unfriendly service at the check-in desk. 9168

Every line below traces back to something a traveler actually wrote — open a line to read the original sentence and follow it to the source.

What travelers noticed

  • Guests praise the central business district location in Guomao for its easy subway access and views of the CCTV building. 9413

  • The two-floor gym impresses visitors with floor-to-ceiling windows and stylish graffiti artwork. 9810
  • The San Wu Tang buffet is widely highlighted for its extensive spread, especially the signature Jian Bing. 8107

The catch

  • The showers had excellent pressure, the bath amenities were dutifully replenished every day (in fact, at least two sets were provided at any given point) and more importantly, that lighted mirror is just perfect for dressing up in the morning. 10
  • My toilet was really spacious, with a fabulous Toto toilet bowl with all the sprays, a separate shower area and even a bathtub. 7

  • 三五堂(breakfast/dinner buffet) is located on the 2nd floor. Offering not only nice view and a variety of food options! From salads, sashimi, fresh fruits and juice machines to traditional Chinese/beijing breakfast, hot foods, fried rice, chow mein, eggs, waffles, coffee/milk/tea/soy milk (my fav), super delicate and delicious desserts/pastries, along with cereals, ice cream, yogurt and so much more! 13
  • Beersmith is located on the first floor with super authentic quesadillas!! And the Philly's sandwich during lunch is a MUST TRY! 13

  • Being amongst the top few levels of the hotel means I got a spectacular view of the Guomao CBD and the architectural wonder that is the CCTV Headquarters, framed in a floor to ceiling window that's 3.8-metre tall. 8
  • I loved that this room was definitely built for the modern day person because it had a gazillion sockets because everyone has a ton of gadgets to charge - that means no hunting for the table lamp socket because you need an extra plug! 7

  • A solid option for those seeking great value, Hotel Jen delivers modern interiors, harbor views, and a great location right by the MTR. 16
  • The Valley Wing Indulgence room package at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore comes with great value - the all-day Champagne seals the deal for me but some hiccups were encountered along the way. 10

  • The service provided by the staff was excellent, with friendly and helpful attitudes. 4
  • Amazing views, wonderful breakfast, nice view, fantastic gym and great staff - especially the concierge Marquez who helped us send some postcards after we had already left China! 13
  • Housekeeping are all super friendly and always refills towels & water for us when we asks. 13
  • The staff were friendly and professional, always ready to assist with any queries or requests. 4
  • On top of the nominated amenities that I have received as a Jade member of the Golden Circle program, the team at the Hotel Jen Beijing were also super nice to arrange for some extra candies, local snacks and a welcome letter for me. 10
  • The only minor issue was with the service. While the staff was friendly, some had difficulty with English. 4
  • The only thing is when I checked into the hotel, the lady who handled my check in was super rude, no smiles and had an attitude and proceeds to tell me that there was only a end room available (I asked to not have end room) however, when I got to my room and saw the floor map, there's technically no end rooms since all rooms wraps around the outer layer of the floor. 13
  • Cons: the only minor issue was the occasional language barrier with the staff, but this is common in China. 4
  • Escalators from the ground floor lead upstairs to reception, a spacious and bright area simply decorated in light beige tones without any superfluous frills. 5
Food18 mentions · 1 filmed
  • Breakfast starts at 6:00AM daily and it ends at 10:00AM (even on weekends) which I found to be slightly cruel to vacation-goers - most of the hotels keep breakfast running until 10:30AM (or even 11:00AM) on weekends. 10
  • Breakfast at Hotel Jen Beijing can be found at San Wu Tang, which serves a hearty international buffet - be sure to try their signature Jian Bing. Surprisingly, their Chicken Rice and Prawn Noodles served at lunch are also pretty good. 8
  • Breakfast in the mornings takes place at San Wu Tang on Level 2 and has quite a decent spread of local and western food. 7
  • I got lazy on my last evening and ordered a bowl of beef noodle soup up to the room - the room service menu isn't the largest but it's enough for a lazy day and pretty prompt. 7
  • Highlights include the rooftop swimming pool, with stunning views over the harbor and skyline, and the on-site Café Malacca restaurant, which has "Bib Gourmand" Michelin rating, and serves Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine. 5
  • Behind all these, you will find a basic coffee and tea station but there is no Nespresso machine here unfortunately - the good news is that the restaurants actually serve a pretty good espresso so if you are ever in need of a pick-me-up, you know where to go! 10
  • Beersmith is located on the first floor with super authentic quesadillas!! And the Philly's sandwich during lunch is a MUST TRY! 13
  • the restaurant and bar/lounge area offered tasty food and drinks, and the Snack bar was very convenient. 4
  • The breakfast buffet was really good, offering a wide range of delicious options to start the day off right. 4
  • The rooms are beautifully-appointed, the food (especially in Beersmith Gastropub which I will cover separately) is delicious and more importantly, the facilities are truly indicative of a brand that is catered towards meeting the needs of modern travellers. 10
  • Even your mornings are taken care of with a high-quality breakfast service to fuel your day of adventure. On camera61:38
  • I went for Breakfast Steak (RMB148), which comprised of a 220g sirloin steak, eggs, hashbrowns, grilled tomatoes, and baked beans. I wasn't a fan of the baked beans but everything else was well executed, despite the fact that most of the Chinese eat their beef beyond medium rare. 8
  • Breakfast at Hotel Jen Beijing can be found at San Wu Tang, which serves a hearty international buffet - be sure to try their signature Jian Bing. 8
  • The daily breakfast and dinner package, along with the free mini bar, nespresso coffee, and fruit bowls, provided excellent value for the money. 4
  • The breakfast spread is quite extensive and you will be able to find a selection of Western and Eastern dishes - there is a salad bar at one end, and on the other side, a 'live' noodle station. 10
  • The breakfast was excellent - very rich and varied, with plenty of choices to suit different tastes. 13
  • The breakfast offered a variety of options and was delicious. 4
Location13 mentions · 2 filmed
  • The nearest subway station of Guomao is an interchange with two of the major lines, 1 and 10, and there's a shopping mall right next to it with decent dining options and a supermarket. 8
  • Fantastic location with great views of the CCTV tower in the heart of the Beijing CBD. 4
  • Don't miss out on a great stay at this fantastic location. On camera61:54
  • With an amazing view of the Victoria Harbour and located near to an MTR Station, the Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong is fast to become the hotel to watch out for in the coming years ahead. 10
  • The location was also convenient, being next to the World Trade Tower. 4
  • Conveniently located in the centre of Beijing's central business district (CBD), the hotel features a vibrant co-working hub, the only gastropub with its own brewery in the Guomao area, and an expansive, industrial-chic world- class gym catering to fitness enthusiasts and road warriors. 9
  • The location was excellent, with easy access to two subway stations and taxis waiting outside the lobby. 4
  • A solid option for those seeking great value, Hotel Jen delivers modern interiors, harbor views, and a great location right by the MTR. 16
  • The hotel is conveniently located just a 30inut drive from the airport, ensuring a smooth and easy journey. On camera170:46
  • With an actual brewery that is located in the basement of the property, the Beersmith Gastropoub serves up to 16 specialty and seasonal beers and ales daily. The pub grub here is also pretty impressive but I will cover this experience in a separate post but since I do not wish to deviate too much from the accommodation experience. 10
  • I recently stayed at a hotel located in between two subway stations, making it very convenient for exploring the city. 4
  • I really like the mall it's above, good coffees shops in walking distance. Well positioned subway lines too. 15
  • The hotel location was superb, just a short walk from the metro station and easily accessible to all the main attractions. 4
Room18 mentions
  • The typical hotel desk was very much smaller and streamlined compared to some of these monstrosities I've seen, sufficient for anyone looking to get a little work done, and with a comfy chair to boot. 7
  • As a modern traveller with plenty of gadgets to charge every day (seriously, I always travel with my iPhone, MacBook Pro, DSLR, electric toothbrush and portable speaker - sometimes more!), I am always grateful for international power sockets and the abundance of USB charging ports - I probably counted at least six different USB ports and easily five universal pocket sockets throughout the room 10
  • Personally I thought it was just ok as a hotel. The standard rooms were not particularly inspiring, just a very basic room. 15
  • The standard rooms were not particularly inspiring, just a very basic room. 15
  • Room 45 is more spacious than it seems online! 13
  • The room was clean and spacious, with a nice view of the nearby CCTV tower. 4
  • Being amongst the top few levels of the hotel means I got a spectacular view of the Guomao CBD and the architectural wonder that is the CCTV Headquarters, framed in a floor to ceiling window that's 3.8-metre tall. 8
  • As a working traveler with plenty of electronics to charge daily (MacBook Air, power bank, and cell phone are the bare minimum), I was appreciative of the international socket and two USB ports on each side of the bed, and more scattered throughout the room. 8
  • I loved that this room was definitely built for the modern day person because it had a gazillion sockets because everyone has a ton of gadgets to charge - that means no hunting for the table lamp socket because you need an extra plug! 7
  • The room was spacious and clean, providing a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere after a long day of exploring the city. 4
  • Since I visited Beijing in summer, I was lucky enough to be blessed with fairly good weather on most days so the view from my room has always been quite impressive (with the exception of one day!). 10
  • The One-Bedroom Suite in the Garden Wing of Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore is one of my favourite stays this year and booking a Luxury Circle rate gave me an additional USD 100 to spend during my stay. 10
  • the room advantages were exceptional, with a comfortable bed and private facilities. 4
  • The room was spacious and offered amazing views of the Beijing CBD. 4
  • Starting at a snug 260 square feet, the wood-paneled rooms are tidy and contemporary. 16
  • I returned back to my room after plenty to drink (and eat) and was rewarded with this amazing night view of the CCTV Headquarters from my very own room. 10
  • I was delighted to find a coffee machine here in San Wu Tang Kitchen (三五堂) which actually delivered a decent espresso shot (even though there was probably too much water). 10
  • Where I've spent most of my time during the stay in the hotel however was the full-size writing desk that is located by the floor-to-ceiling windows. Honestly, this could very well be the largest work desk that I have ever had in a lead-in category room (since the Jen Skyline has the same size and layout). 10
Bathroom8 mentions
  • The bathroom was minimalist - think white tiles, marble, and black-framed mirrors - and large enough, with double vanities, a large shower area, and a toilet with a TOTO washlet system, complete with seat warmer for the brutal Beijing winter. 8
  • There is also a sizeable wardrobe outside of the bathroom where you will find some really comfortable bath slippers (albeit disposable), an iron, ironing board, bathrobes, a safe and also two strange canisters which contain some kind of fire protection device - I was actually curious enough to examine the canister. 10
  • The showers had excellent pressure, the bath amenities were dutifully replenished every day (in fact, at least two sets were provided at any given point) and more importantly, that lighted mirror is just perfect for dressing up in the morning. 10
  • The bathroom was well-maintained and had all the necessary amenities. 4
  • My toilet was really spacious, with a fabulous Toto toilet bowl with all the sprays, a separate shower area and even a bathtub. 7
  • While I would have personally preferred the latter room type, the bathroom in my room was sufficient for a short stay. 10
  • Shower pressure is very nice and water is very soft! 13
  • The cleanliness of the hotel, especially the clear mirror in the bathroom after a shower, was a sweet detail that we loved. 4
View2 mentions
  • Absolutely loved JEN! beautiful view of the city and cctv building. 13
  • The hotel facilities were great, with spacious and luxurious rooms that offered a great view. 4
Value4 mentions
  • However, the breakfast offered at the hotel (which is not included in the rate) does not get enthusiastic reviews, and past guests have found it to be less than a good value. 5
  • The Valley Wing Indulgence room package at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore comes with great value - the all-day Champagne seals the deal for me but some hiccups were encountered along the way. 10
  • Out of what's in the area, it's one of the better ones for the price unless you're looking at Rosewood or Bulgari pricing? 15
  • A solid option for those seeking great value, Hotel Jen delivers modern interiors, harbor views, and a great location right by the MTR. 16
