The verdict

Who's travelling?

Pick a traveller type to re-weight the scores and re-rank the rooms around what you actually care about.

Read it your way

This downtown property offers comfortable rooms within easy walking distance of Austin nightlife and music venues. Guests benefit from plush beds, abundant power outlets, and a hot breakfast with pancakes and bacon. However, interior soundproofing is poor, with thin adjoining doors letting in distinct noise from neighboring rooms. 610

What travelers noticed

  • Guests consistently praise the comfortable king beds, plush pillows, and generous number of electrical outlets. 96
  • The morning breakfast serves a reliable spread of hot items including bacon, pancakes, sausage, and cheesy egg omelets in a spacious dining area. 10
  • Thin connecting doors between adjacent rooms allow noise like conversations and sneezing to pass directly into guest quarters. 6

The catch

  • While some praise the central location within walking distance of Sixth Street and SXSW events, others warn that the immediate surrounding blocks feel dodgy near local shelters. 362
  • Some guests appreciate the functional bathroom and strong water pressure, though others note the shower head position easily spills water onto the floor. 9

Who it's for

  • Nightlife trips to Sixth Street and Rainey Street
  • Concertgoers visiting Stubb's BBQ
  • Short downtown stays on IHG points

Skip it if

  • Light sleepers sensitive to adjoining room noise
  • Anyone uncomfortable staying near local shelters

  • The breakfast had the standard fare, including a selection of breads and cereals. There were 3 hot items which had pancakes, bacon and sausage and a cheesy egg omelet. The bacon was quite good - large, thick and crispy. And of course there were plenty of my favorite IHG cinnamon rolls. 10

Location

  • Location is everything, and this hotel places you exactly where you want to be. Situated near the University of Texas and surrounded by the city's most iconic downtown attractions, you're just steps away from Austin's world-renowned music scene, eclectic local eateries, and incredible outdoor activities. 2
  • The Hotel Indigo Austin Downtown-University is perfectly located for many types of visitors, especially those in town for a downtown conference, sightseeing, SXSW or a concert at Stubb's BBQ. 6

Noise

  • There were two elevators. Although we never needed to wait long for an elevator, getting the elevator to read the room key and allow access to our floor often took a while. Every guest we shared an elevator with seemed equally frustrated. 6
  • My biggest complaint about the suite: the connecting door to an adjacent room. Two different groups stayed in the adjoining room during our stay, and for both groups we heard every sniffle, sneeze and conversation clearly. The door was so poor at muffling the sound that that it sounded like the other guests were in our room. 6

Room

  • The suite had a large king bed with two nightstands, which featured storage as well as individual lights. The bed was plush and comfortable. 6
  • Because of this design, the lowest Indigo rooms are on the sixth floor, directly above the highest Holiday Inn Express rooms. Our suite was on this sixth floor, which still provided nice views across north and west Austin. 6

Service4 mentions · 1 filmed
  • Check-in went quickly, but I was surprised that the agent didn't welcome me as an IHG Platinum elite. Further, she didn't mention that I'd received an upgrade from the standard room I'd booked with points. 6
  • Staff is friendly, design is modern and clean. 3
  • The staff generally didn't engage with guests but were friendly when I asked for anything. 6
  • Whether you are visiting for business or a well-deserved leisure getaway, you'll find that the service here is as warm as the Texas sun. On camera20:35

  • Because of this design, the lowest Indigo rooms are on the sixth floor, directly above the highest Holiday Inn Express rooms. Our suite was on this sixth floor, which still provided nice views across north and west Austin. 6
  • Wi-Fi was complimentary for all guests, and each room also had complimentary wired internet. Both seemed to be throttled, though. Connecting was quick and painless, since this hotel used the IHGConnect framework. 6
  • My room was comfortable, and despite being on the bottom floor overlooking multiple bars and concert venues, I only heard and felt the bass from these venues on two nights - and wasn't kept awake either night. 6
  • The suite had a large king bed with two nightstands, which featured storage as well as individual lights. The bed was plush and comfortable. 6
Location8 mentions
  • Location is everything, and this hotel places you exactly where you want to be. Situated near the University of Texas and surrounded by the city's most iconic downtown attractions, you're just steps away from Austin's world-renowned music scene, eclectic local eateries, and incredible outdoor activities. 2
  • Overall this was a good stay if you need to stay in the Downtown area of Austin or are looking for a Downtown Austin hotel. I would mostly recommend it on points but if you can pick it up on a cheap cash rate it's super convenient to most things in the area. 10
  • The Hotel Indigo Austin Downtown-University is perfectly located for many types of visitors, especially those in town for a downtown conference, sightseeing, SXSW or a concert at Stubb's BBQ. 6
  • Wifi is complimentary in the lobby and in the guest rooms for IHG members. The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Austin Downtown wifi was decent but not spectacular 10
  • WiFi is complimentary at the Hyatt House Austin/Downtown, and I found the speed to be okay. Even though that speed test was slow, I didn't have a problem accessing the Internet or streaming videos. 9
  • The hotel is in a great location for those looking to enjoy Austin's nightlife, with Sixth Street a few blocks south, Rainey Street bars a 15-minute walk to the south and bars and restaurants on East Sixth and Seventh streets a 15-minute walk to the southeast. 6
  • All in all, my Hyatt House Austin/Downtown hotel review is that it was a pleasant stay. It is conveniently located and a good redemption on points or on cash. 9
  • The hotel can sometimes be found for around $150 per night, which is pretty good considering its location. 6
Value4 mentions
  • The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Austin Downtown also has a "Market" near the front desk with a variety of things you can purchase for outrageous prices. 10
  • 🙂 There is a ton of seating in the lobby and plenty of room to space out. There is also the "H Market" that has various overpriced dinners, snacks and drinks. 9
  • Service was ok, but the price is way too expensive for what you get. 3
  • The thin door between the room and the adjoining room was more of a noise concern than the nearby concert venues. At a hotel of Hotel Indigo's caliber and price range, being able to clearly comprehend neighbors' conversations isn't acceptable. 6
Bed & Sleep2 mentions
  • The bed and pillows were comfortable, and there were plenty of electrical outlets available. 9
  • The bed was directly in front of you, and was quite comfortable 10
Bathroom5 mentions
  • One minor problem was that it was almost impossible to not spill water all over the floor due to the way that the door and shower head were positioned. 9
  • The shower also had refillable toiletries, and the temperature and pressure was great. 10
  • The bathroom was small but functional. The water pressure was excellent. 9
  • The shower was plenty spacious for me, but probably wouldn't have been tall enough for TPG. 6
  • The bathroom was relatively large, with enough counterspace but no shelves. 6
