The verdict

Who's travelling?

Pick a traveller type to re-weight the scores and re-rank the rooms around what you actually care about.

Read it your way

Mercure Sydney provides a convenient base in downtown Sydney with spacious rooms and reliable family-friendly amenities. Visitors highlight the comfortable large beds, quiet air conditioning, and TVs stocked with over 100 free movies alongside a solid buffet breakfast. However, storage is a recurrent issue with only two hanging spaces and no real drawers, and some rooms exhibit maintenance lapses such as mould in the bathroom grout. 1121417

Every line below traces back to something a traveler actually wrote — open a line to read the original sentence and follow it to the source.

What travelers noticed

  • Reviewers praise the in-room entertainment, highlighting the big flat screen TV with access to over 100 free movie releases. 11
  • The buffet style breakfast earns regular compliments for its variety, offering pod coffee machines and homemade scones with jam and cream. 20
  • Guests consistently find the spacious rooms comfortable, noting that the air conditioning works a treat without being loud. 1114

The catch

  • While some guests report that outside street noise is barely discernable, others note that loud crowd cheers and commentary from nearby games filter clearly into the rooms. 214
  • Bathroom experiences also vary, with several guests praising modern fixtures, great water pressure, and spa baths, while others encounter mould in the grout and dated shower/tub combos. 26

Who it's for

  • Downtown Sydney sightseers
  • Families needing spacious double bed rooms and sofa beds
  • Movie buffs enjoying extensive free in-room films

Skip it if

  • Light sleepers bothered by loud cheers and commentary from nearby games
  • Travelers needing ample luggage storage and dresser drawers
  • Anyone sensitive to mould in tile grout or older shower/tub combos

  • Not far from shops and in walking distance of Darling harbour where there are plenty of restaurants and bars and shops and popular place to be seen always something going on ,and not far from wharf 5 where the cruise ships come in . 12
  • Centrally located, the Sydney Mercure Rouse Hill is perfectly located for Hills District business, fun and activities. 14
  • I ended up booking Menzies Hotel. $338.00 for two nights with breakfast included. That's a good price, the hotel us a little tired but in a very convenient location you can walk to he OPT easily. 13
  • so it's pretty good in terms of the fact that it's right in the center of town you've got all the shops you got all the restaurants everything down there right down to the center of town you can still walk to the river you can still walk to the beach so in that regard it's pretty good even if you're not like got that water front which you can get if you're willing to pay for it On camera113:19
  • 118 pounds($A 176) is the best I've found close to the city. We always stay here precruise as it's in the Darling Harbour precinct..a great spot. 19
  • I second the Holiday Inn, Old Sydney. It's right in the middle of the Rocks area with great shops/restaurants and a 5 minute walk to the bridge, the international passenger terminal (where your ship may be docked), the opera house, botanical gardens and Circular Quay where all the harbour ferries operate to/from. 12
  • Location is also very good with an easy walk to Circular Quay, shopping etc. 12
  • With the Central Station/Broadway area undergoing an urban renewal programme, and new residential, commercial and educational buildings transforming the precinct, the Mercure Sydney enjoys a prime location in the heart of it all. 8
  • I satyed in Travelodge Wynyard in September last year and it was great...good prices and right next to Wynyard train station...short walk to Circular Quay and Darling Harbour...:) 19
  • The location serves as a convenient base to explore the city. 16
  • Before we went on our Celebrity Edge cruise in Sydney, Australia, we stayed one night at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney. It's a five-star hotel and it's absolutely centrally located. It's real close to Circular Key and the Rocks neighborhood and really close to the cruise ship as well. On camera200:00
  • Yes it is definitely in need of a refurb our bed was terrible and the customer service and f & b available inside lacked a lot. The location was great though. 13
  • My boyfriend and I stayed at the Mercure so he could watch a football game at 4 Pines Park (Brookvale Oval). For this, the hotel's location was exceptional, but for everything else, it wasn't the best because it's so out of the way. 2
  • Depending on your budget, the Marriott at Circular Quay is great. No more that a five minute walk to the OPT and great views of the harbour, bridge and opera house (depending on where your room is) 12

  • Service at the front desk is warm and friendly and holiday makers, conference delegates and business travellers give the hotel an energetic buzz. 8
  • Have also stayed at the Castlereagh Boutique Hotel which is old fashioned but was clean, comfortable and lovely staff. 19
  • Have stayed their twice: once just after it opened and then again a couple of months ago both occasions as ALL Gold and status well recognised. Staff very friendly and engaging 4

  • so you're in here with a family got lots of bags you don't have anywhere to sit your bags and you don't really have anywhere to kind of put stuff away so our bag's just kind of sitting on the floor On camera1115:17
  • Lastly, while the staff at the hotel were polite and lovely to deal with, they did accidentally double charge us, however, it was resolved within a week. 2
  • it's nice it's bright it's clean feels pretty new On camera1111:07
  • The hotel has a small but welcoming reception and lounge area, offering lounge seating and a big screen tv. 14
  • and the staff here are lovely too I got say it's been really really really easy dealing with them they've been really accommodating you know I I had a need to come here and on my luggage really early in the morning and then come back for checkin and they just took care of it all it was great On camera113:50

  • Comfortable rooms with modern, purple decor and minibars; some with balconies and/or city views 17
  • Rooms tend to feel small because the decor is quite dark 4

  • Positively speaking, the room was clean, tidy, and spacious, and the bed was comfortable. 2
  • It doesn't have spectacular harbour views (except from the roof terrace) but otherwise it's fine. 12
  • Waiheke Island, New Zealand We booked at the York apartment Hotel as well for our upcoming cruise. We booked at the York apartment Hotel as well for our upcoming cruise. Mainly because of having the extra space compared to a hotel room and it is really central. 13
  • Depending on your budget, the Marriott at Circular Quay is great. No more that a five minute walk to the OPT and great views of the harbour, bridge and opera house (depending on where your room is) 12
  • The layout is so generous that it could easily accommodate a group or family without feeling squeezed. 6
  • The Superior Double Rooms offer natural light-filled rooms with one large double bed and breathtaking, sweeping views of central Sydney. 16
  • The room was small, but it did have a large bathroom and a very good airco/heating. 12
  • The room itself felt spacious. It had a nice flat screen television and also had this little bar area which has glasses and it also has these shelves underneath it which was filled with all sorts of stuff. On camera202:04
  • The room was clean though not large and nicely furnished with a comfortable bed and very quiet - and you get a tiny kitchenette. 12
  • And what you're viewing right now is the lobby, which is absolutely gorgeous. We had a really beautiful room at the Four Seasons Hotel with a beautiful view of the Sydney Opera House. 20
  • I booked a Double Bed Room, and I was genuinely surprised by how huge and comfortable the bed was. 6
  • I loved my room's new look but with no ceiling light it seemed rather dark at night. Floor lamps added some atmosphere and the strong, directional bedside lights were great for reading but overall it would have been good to have a bit more light. 8
  • but again this room has no bedside tables so as you can see there there's no so again it's just it's just it's just weird that they wouldn't have that but anyway I mean it's not the end of the world it's just strange On camera1115:48
  • Other throw pillows had horses racing across the bottom of them! It's an elegant-meets-unusual hotel room styling theme that somehow works beautifully - and it isn't the boring old white bed, white walls and metal table approach you often find in other hotels. 14
  • five washers and dryers, and an adjacent, small waiting room with comfy chairs, a flat-screen TV, and a tabletop PacMan game. 17
  • Purple and grey interiors create a relaxed, yet contemporary feel and the new Privilege Rooms come with extra perks like a fluffy robe, Nespresso machine, welcome chocolates and a bottle of Evian. 8
  • The beds, including the pull-out sofa bed were all very comfortable with good quality bedding. Although the hotel fronts the Windsor Road, the noise was barely discernable even though we were on the first floor, so room soundproofing is effective. 14
  • Even though room 305 was at the top, the hotel isn't that elevated above the surrounding boundaries. And because it was on the side, the views were not great. 2
  • The room also comes equipped with a dedicated desk and a cozy sofa area, which made it super convenient to sit back, unwind, and enjoy some late night snacks after a long day of sightseeing. 6
  • We were charged an extra $50 to upgrade from a single hotel room to a one bedroom suite, bringing our room total price to $289 for a mid-week stay, which I thought was quite reasonable. 14
  • The Mercure also has an outdoor terrace space with clay-colored tile and stylish, white patio furniture below huge umbrellas; the space can be rented out for corporate events and small parties, a boon to the clientele, which includes a significant number of business travelers. 17
  • I've stayed in both, and would choose a Superior Room at the Menzies, a really good size if you have a child and nice view over the park. 13
  • The beds, including the pull-out sofa bed were all very comfortable with good quality bedding. 14

  • One minor downside was that only two complimentary bottles of water are provided for the entire stay. Since bottled water in Sydney is surprisingly expensive (a small bottle at a local convenience store cost me around $4 AUD!), this felt a bit stingy. 6
  • As for the room, we didn't appreciate that the hotel was advertised as new when, besides the ground floor level, it was far from that. We felt we got ripped off and he paid a four-star price for an old three-star hotel. 2

  • Avoid: Mercure Wynyard and (former Mercure) Sebel Martin Place. Both ex-Travelodge and I think worst value in city. 4
  • With all the standard luxury features you would expect for the hotel room price point of almost $300, the Sydney Mercure offered sparklingly clean rooms and effective, controllable climate control. 14
  • Sydney hotel prices at that time were very high but this place was good value for what you got. 12
  • We have stayed in the Menzies a number of times - it is our "go-to" hotel if we need to stay in the city and we are not celebrating an occasion of any sort. • The bathroom in 305 of the Mercure Hotel in Brookvale was of modest size. Like the room, it doesn't appear like it was updated since Accor took over and is what you would expect from a budget hotel. 2
