Read it your way

Known as the Grand Dutch Residence, this classic luxury hotel sits on the Amstel River and delivers spacious rooms, grand hallways, and fine French-Mediterranean dining at La Rive. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, terrace cocktails at A Bar, and large marble bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. However, reviewers note that the historic building has gone decades without a comprehensive renovation, resulting in dated room details and tram noise that cuts through the older windows. 27281511

  • The marble bathroom was spacious and had a separate bath and shower. Plenty of towels were stocked and the counter space was plentiful. 27
  • The bathroom was spacious and came with separate bathtub and shower - which I loved because showers in old-style bathtubs tend to be pretty pathetic. 1

  • We were dining at the Amstel Brasserie while our room was getting prepared and as we were finishing our lunch, a staff member came down to the brasserie to hand us our room keys and our luggage was already waiting for us in our room. That is some outstanding service. 27

  • The bed was comfortable and much appreciated after a long day of walking throughout Amsterdam's city center. There were four fluffy pillows and three accent pillows that matched the wallpaper. 2
  • The bed base was large, as it was two single bases put together. The bed and the pillows were very comfortable. 5

  • The brasserie was located just below the Amstel lounge, which provided a beautiful level view of the Amstel River. We ordered a Club Sandwich to share and the price tag was the most we have ever paid for a Club Sandwich, but it was so worth it. It was by far THE best Club Sandwich we ever had. 27
  • Service was always given with a smile and the staff seemed genuinely happy/cheerful/friendly whenever we interacted with them - it got the day off to a good, if slightly expensive start. 1

Location30 mentions
  • What a beautiful hotel and location! We really want to do a tour of Amsterdam-Bruges-Paris, though we would probably go with AirBnB rentals since we are a family of four. 5
  • Personally, the location is just okay: it's on the outer ring of canals - quiet, but a bit far from the city centre and museums. 4
  • I just stayed at Sir Adam just a month ago and I loved the convenience. It's right across the river from the main area, so it's about a 10 minute walk to get there and there is a nice free and frequent ferry that gets you across. 7
  • The hotel was a 20-minute walk from many of the popular, touristy attractions near the red-light district. But that didn't mean that the hotel wasn't in a great location. The trendy De Pijp neighborhood was less than a 10-minute walk west. 2
  • Its location gives easy access to Museumplein and nearby galleries, ideal for a culture-focused itinerary; guests often plan mornings at the lobby café, followed by a stroll to the square for a museum visit, and you can come back to the hotel for a late lunch. 20
  • Kimpton is probably the most conveniently located IHG property in Amsterdam - it's just a 10mins walk from Amsterdam Centraal station. 25
  • Love the Renaissance because of the location. 7
  • Would second the Renaissance, stayed there it was right in the middle of everything. Very close to Centraal Station as well, easy to get luggage there after coming into the city from Schipol 7
  • An electric hot water jug for hot drinks was nearby. However the lead was not long enough to reach the plug socket, so we moved it to the desktop. 5
  • It is convenient for the airport via a change at Amsterdam Zuid to the metro. It is most convenient for the museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh) and the luxury shopping area surrounding them. 24
  • Located a bit off the beaten path, in a quiet neighborhood within easy walking district of the Van Gogh Museum and Royal Carré Theatre, the luxury hotel has 55 guest rooms and 24 suites, all appointed with Dutch period furniture, plush drapes, Delft pottery and such modern amenities as flat-screen satellite TVs and iPod docking stations. 9
  • The InterContinental Amstel Amsterdam is located south-east of the city centre and within walking distance of just about everything you may want to visit in Amsterdam. 1
  • The rooms are spacious and well appointed and the location is perfect - any closer to the centre and you run the risk of crowded, narrower streets. 1
  • The location may not be right in the prime tourist area, but it's in a neighborhood with a charm of its own. 2
  • We stayed at the Hotel Estherea and loved it! It sits right on a canal. It is quiet, yet easily walkable to everything as we never needed to take a tram. 14
  • ....and on more than one level.... It was such a shame that the weather wasn't a little bit nicer for our visit because any of those terraces would have been great to sit out on, with a cup of coffee, while watching the world go by on the river - it's a great location. 1
  • The hotel is located at the shore of the Amstel river and most places in Amsterdam center can be walked in 15-25 minutes which makes it a great location. 13
  • Of course location wise for walking to redlight-districts, dam square, catching canal-cruise Kimpton is in better location. 23
  • I really like the Renaissance. I've stayed there twice while in Amsterdam and had a great stay both times. It's very convenient to Amsterdam Centraal and a short walk to the Anne Frank House and some other must do things in the city. 7
  • After you arrive, a short walk to the centre's highlights is ideal; the Amstel area offers canal views, boutiques, and easy access to transport. 20
  • https://www.breathehotelleiden.nl/en We really loved The Toren and the location was fantastic! We enjoyed the Hotel Nadia, which is near the Anne Frank House and easy to visit the city from there walking. 14
  • The location was fabulous for just wandering & taking in the beautiful scenery and there was a tram stop fairly close by. 14
  • I like the location near the station and some tourist stuff, partly because I'll be with friends who might stay wherever I do in Amsterdam on this trip and (unlike me) they've never been to Amsterdam before. 23
  • Kimpton is probably the most conveniently located IHG property in Amsterdam - it's just a 10mins walk from Amsterdam Centraal station. From there is a short 20-30mins to musuemplein or you can take the trams. 25
  • We stayed at Breathe Hotel. We really loved The Toren and the location was fantastic! 14
  • Absolutely loved the location of the Park Hotel next to Vondelpark. 7
  • Kimpton de Witt was a little pricy but still great value on points. The location was awesome. 25
  • Amsterdam is a very compact city with an excellent transit system, so you really can't go wrong with hotel locations in the area. We loved that we were within walking distance to the metro station and to multiple tram stops. 27
  • Third the Renaissance. We loved it. Perfect location 7
  • The riverfront Amstel, originally opened in 1867, is in a quiet location and is a 20-25min walk to central tourist parts of Amsterdam. 22
Food28 mentions
  • Every morning, prepare to be spoiled by a bountiful breakfast buffet, which includes a pancake and waffle trolley as well as eggs, freshly laid at sunrise. 8
  • Second dinner was calmer, in the hands of Floris for a cool aged white wine. Food was also nice although I had no room left for desert :) 12
  • Both Lotte & Estelle are absolute angels, impressive memory and patience in dealing with the tough breakfast crowds. 12
  • Inside, the hotel has a number of super-comfortable lounge areas, most with great views of the river, where guests can have lunch or just a tea/coffee/wine etc.... 1
  • Executive chef Rogér Rassin makes haute cuisine approachable without sacrificing the sophisticated décor and impeccable service. 8
  • The next morning, there was a knock on the door at 10:14am. It wasn't until just now, while looking at the photo, that I realized they forgot our smoothie! Other than that (and me squirting my eggs Benny all over the place out of my own stupidity), the breakfast was great. 2
  • The restaurant, the coffee shop and the bar are all decent and convenient. The staff is eager to please. 25
  • The atmosphere feels elegant yet welcoming, and the culinary options at the on-site restaurant earn positive mentions. 20
  • Besides classic Western breakfast items, there were options like shashuka and pane carasau, which is a nice touch. 4
  • The hotel's signature restaurant, La Rive, gets high praise for its fine French-Mediterranean fare. 11
  • The free breakfast (diamond perk) was the best during our month long EU trip. 25
  • y wifi throughout the hotel and, while I didn't do a speed test, it seemed fast enough for our needs (email, surfing the web for restaurants etc...). 1
  • Free breakfast at Kimpton is pretty good if you're diamond and getting it included, though if paying for breakfast I'd have gone and found somewhere outside the hotel most days. 25
  • We were served a very high quality breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Amstel, which included pastries, egg dishes, bread, fruit, juice, coffee etc. It is expensive if it's not included in the rate though (I think above 30 euros per person), and I think Amsterdam is not short of excellent breakfast/brunch destinations for cheaper. 22
  • Stayed at the De Witt is 2023 for a week. It was great. Rooms were great. The free breakfast (diamond perk) was the best during our month long EU trip. 25
  • The unfussy, seasonal cuisine and craft cocktails in the restaurants and bars infuse the traditional space with modern sensibilities. 9
  • Nevertheless, the buffet selection was very nice and the cooked-to-order Eggs Benedict I had were done to perfection. 1
  • The hotel only serves one type of breakfast but it encompasses just about everything you can want - it's a buffet with a choice of cooked-to-order meals all for $40 (£26.50/€36.50) (unless you want to add Caviar or Truffles which will cost you more). 1
  • The gastronomy and ambiance for meals at Amstel's restaurant make it a pleasent calm enjoyment. 12
  • Second breakfast was also great, enjoying my fav choice and a nice talk with Estelle who tipped me on the Afternoon tea area decoration. 12
  • I am glad Amstel restaurant is not full and currently enjoying a nice dinner with fantastic wine 12
  • Living in Amsterdam, just down the Amstel from the hotel (5 mins on the bike!) we love coming here for a quiet coffee, or brunch or a sundowner on the terrace... 24
  • Stayed at the De Witt is 2023 for a week. It was great. Rooms were great. The free breakfast (diamond perk) was the best during our month long EU trip. Also super close the to train and most of the tourist stuff 25
  • Hoxton would be my second choice. But the rooms are teeny tiny. But the lobby is fun. A bit like a bus station with loads of activity. Food is generally good. 7
  • We were served a very high quality breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Amstel, which included pastries, egg dishes, bread, fruit, juice, coffee etc. 22
  • Service is outstanding and the breakfast is even better. 14
  • Behind the lobby is a gorgeous afternoon tea restaurant with beautiful colour schemes. 4
  • The restaurant, the coffee shop and the bar are all decent and convenient. 25
Room36 mentions
  • As well as being a good size, the bathroom came with a good array of toiletries..... We had an entry-level room so we weren't expecting anything at all - which is just as well because the view wasn't much to write home about: 1
  • oh hey guys I'm super super excited because our room has been upgraded to Sweet with the riverv viw the armster Riverview it is so pretty and I can't wait to give you guys the room too 18
  • The room was a very good size - around 320 sqft or 30 sqm - if a little blue thanks to the Delft-style decor they've chosen: I can't honestly say that Delft is my thing but, luckily, it wasn't everywhere.... 1
  • The HI Express was decent, though I got upgraded to a big corner room so not sure how the regular rooms are. 25
  • In keeping with the rest of the Amstel Hotel, room 220, was furnished and decorated in an elegant antique style, with the occasional concession to the modern era. 5
  • The other end table didn't have any outlets that would allow me to charge my phone while lying in bed. Instead, it had a control switch for the lights and air conditioning. 2
  • As well as a lounge and a bar, the hotel has a terrace on the Amstel river. A perfect place to use my drinks voucher. 22
  • An ornate, high-backed armchair in a gold and orange patterned material with a roll cushion and curved wooden legs matched the upright chair by the desk. The latter had a slightly worn seat and the back looked to have been recently reupholstered. 5
  • The main attraction for us was eating on the terrace of La Rive, right by the canal with boats passing by (people take pictures of the hotel and you also get to feel like a celebrity). 22
  • A set of doors from the lounge led out to the terrace, which had an outdoor bar and tons of seating. It seemed like it would be a great summertime hangout. 2
  • The king sized bed was flanked by beautiful marble topped tables and attractive bedside lamps. 28
  • My room was HUGE, beautifully decorated, had a really nice bathroom, a canal view, and AC (which turned out to be unexpectedly needed...forecast before I left called for mid-60's, but it hit over 80° for a few days). 14
  • We absolutely adored the intricate and exclusive hand painted blue wallpaper which was enchanting and really created a unique atmosphere. It brought so much character to the room. 27
  • That was a first for us to each have our own personal closet, which we took full advantage of. We were a little surprised at how small the beds looked (we're used to big American queen size beds), but they were actually plenty big and super comfy. 27
  • Use the in-room tech to tailor light and climate; the mirror lights provide theatre-grade brightness for morning routines, and bedside controls simplify operations. 20
  • The current French-inspired decor channels the building's original architecture and includes romantic hand-drawn wallpaper in bedrooms. 9
  • The hall's decor offers an eclectic backdrop that sets the tone for a relaxed stay. 20
  • It was so interesting to read your review of the Amstel. I was the pro photographer who did all their advertising photography a couple of years ago. The bedrooms - and the royal suite - are amazing. 5
  • The room was a very good size - around 320 sqft or 30 sqm - if a little blue thanks to the Delft-style decor they've chosen: 1
  • The first thing I did was walk over to the window to check out our river view. Not bad, but not as good as an upgrade to a suite would have been. 2
  • The customer service is impeccable and the resort is gorgeous with historic and contemporary decor - my favorite! 27
  • With only 55 rooms, every room is spacious and decorated beautifully with Delftware and other Dutch touches. 28
  • And I know, as an IC ambassador, they will always upgrade me to an excellent junior suite with a huge bathroom, high ceilings and a view. 22
  • We booked a twin room with a river view located on the 4th floor in Room 404. We immediately loved how bright and spacious the room was laid out in a classic French style with large double windows looking out to the Amstel River. 27
  • The room was small, but bathroom was normal size. 14
  • The room itself was spacious and filled with antique furniture. 2
  • Furniture is simple but not plain, giving a "classic" rather than "dated" impression. 4
  • The suite is very square and well-laid-out, which I like. 4
  • A room with a view of the river is worth the splurge. 21
  • Whether you enjoy an alfresco lunch at Amstel Brasserie, or unwind with a evening cocktail on the terrace of the A Bar, few locations in city will give you a better open-air view. 8
  • We then had a rapid walk back to the lift and his desk to get another key. It was certainly worth the effort, as our minds were quickly made up when we saw room 220. It was a little smaller, but the two large windows overlooking the River Amstel more than made up for the size reduction. 5
  • The layout of the hotel is still the same but I like the updated decor. 23
  • All of the rooms have a similar design scheme, although most are blue and not pink. Eclectic is, without a doubt, the word. I'm fine with eclectic. I have a house full of modern furniture and I like the novelty of living like this for a night. 24
  • The 1 bedroom suite is pretty nice, enjoy your stay and don't forget to park your kids in the swimming pool. 12
  • I did like the Penthouse Suite (where I ended up, the old lounge) and for €600 on a sunny Summer day I would be tempted by this given the big outdoor terrace. 23
  • Large quiet bedroom (31-35 m²), wifi enabled, with Illy coffee and tea facilities and large opening windows overlooking the Amstel river. Whilst a large size, I felt that the room could be refreshed. 22
Noise6 mentions
  • We stayed at the Hotel Estherea and loved it! It sits right on a canal. It is quiet, yet easily walkable to everything as we never needed to take a tram. 14
  • We were assigned to Room 316, which happened to be right next to the elevator. We didn't hear any noise, though. Not even an elevator ding. 2
  • First room I was allocated was so noisy with the tram I had to ask to be moved the following day. 23
  • After gawking around the lobby, we made our way to the elevator, which, of course, was just as elegant. 2
  • The building is over a hundred years old, so renovations can't make major structural changes. As a result, window soundproofing isn't perfect, but the location is quiet. 4
  • The music was so loud that it was hard to relax by the pool so we headed for the spa facilities. 5
Bed & Sleep7 mentions · 1 filmed
  • The bed base was beige, but the duvet was in a white stripe, with a white sheet and pillows. There was a good quality diamond-patterned carpet in beige and orange. 5
  • talking about low light I think the first thing I could think of there slippers so because those slippers can be very very slippery on the floor so I almost like sleep over last night so it can be super dangerous On camera186:09
  • The bed was comfortable and much appreciated after a long day of walking throughout Amsterdam's city center. There were four fluffy pillows and three accent pillows that matched the wallpaper. 2
  • It had a single slim drawer. There was a standard lamp with a large pleated white shade and a circular table around its stand. It had a very old plug, which went into a dated multi-point plug socket. 5
  • Beds come with crisp linen, a breathable duvet, and multiple pillow options to suit different preferences. Most guests value the balance of support and softness, and staff can adjust arrangements quickly if you want to switch firmness or add an extra blanket during a cool night in Amsterdam. 20
  • InterContinental Amstel Hotel Amsterdam is a classic luxury hotel with history and stories, yet a place where a guest can find a comfortable bed in a boutique style grand hotel. 15

  • Scam $5 amenity fee at Holiday Inn Mount Pleasant, Michigan 25
  • Kimpton de Witt was a little pricy but still great value on points. 25
  • It is expensive if it's not included in the rate though (I think above 30 euros per person), and I think Amsterdam is not short of excellent breakfast/brunch destinations for cheaper. 22
  • Unfortunately the bottles to the right of the coffee maker were anything but complimentary! There was the usual type of mini bar with the usual "you've got to be kidding me!" prices.... 1
  • I stayed at 't Hotel, on a side canal close to the Anne Frank house in May 2024 & really liked it. It was a splurge for me for sure (ave $350-$400/night) but i thought it was worth it. 14
  • I've not stayed on points yet but 60,000 is a steal for most dates at this hotel, as it's often 500-600 euros a night (staycation deal was 375 inc tax, breakfast, F&B credit, which is why I didn't use points). 22
  • Clearly this is anything but cheap and you're hit extra hard if, like us, you tend not to take up the Champagne which is included in the price. 1
  • Prices and fees are clearly communicated up front; staff avoid surprises and offer alternatives if a requested option is not available, which preserves guest trust and the royal feel of the stay. 20
  • Technologically, there was only three European two-pin sockets on one side of the bed. At this price point, I would have expected USB sockets on either side of the bed. 22
  • Service was always given with a smile and the staff seemed genuinely happy/cheerful/friendly whenever we interacted with them - it got the day off to a good, if slightly expensive start. 1
  • Quiet location and good use of a 'free' night certificate for an extended whistle-stop tour of the city. However, I feel this hotel should be refreshed and modernised technologically, to justify its fairly high cash and points price. 22
Service47 mentions
  • Check in was handled efficiently and I was pleased that my room was ready despite being slightly before official check in time. 28
  • The customer service is impeccable and the resort is gorgeous with historic and contemporary decor - my favorite! 27
  • The closest I came to the restaurant was the sign outside. It is hard not to be conspicuous walking around the hotel lobby with a camera. Unlike many luxury hotels, I was encouraged by staff to take photos of the interior. 15
  • The staff is eager to please. 25
  • Unfortunately, the service we received did not match the stunning location. However, I have to acknowledge that the final outcome was fair. The acting general manager took ownership of the issues raised and came up with a fair resolution. 5
  • As we exited the lift to check out, our cases were taken from us by the concierge. My husband requested a taxi. The concierge asked, "Where to?" (the question I was dreading). When my husband said: "Holiday Inn Express City Hall", the concierge gave him a look of surprise mixed with disgust. 5
  • The staff are friendly, helpful and, during our stay, always smiling - that often makes the difference between a good stay and a great stay. 1
  • I also found the check in and service less stuffy somehow. 23
  • The Intercontinental Amstel Amsterdam is a luxurious hotel, with very high levels of service. 22
  • The staff is always into a chat and knows everything about the dishes served, the wines and the Dutch cheeses. 13
  • From the elegant rooms to the attentive staff, I couldn't have expected more from an InterContinental hotel (well, besides a better upgrade). 2
  • In the early evening, we received a call from the duty manager. As the phone line was bad, she came to our room. Her purpose was to check that we were happy with the outcome of our complaint. There appeared to be some confusion over the drinks vouchers and further staff training was proposed. She was very polite and apologetic and offered further assistance. 5
  • We were dining at the Amstel Brasserie while our room was getting prepared and as we were finishing our lunch, a staff member came down to the brasserie to hand us our room keys and our luggage was already waiting for us in our room. That is some outstanding service. 27
  • Check-in was relaxing as we were seated with compliments of flavored water and friendly service. 27
  • Here's a breakdown of our experiences with the various staff at the hotel. Although polite, we felt that the guest service assistant rushed us around the hotel and was not happy with our choice of room. 5
  • The reputable concierge team, led by Aad van den Berg, is always available to give insider tips and impressive local knowledge. 8
  • What a shame the staff let down what should have been a first class experience. 5
  • The porters were polite and quick to relieve us of our luggage, but they were not as quick to operate the revolving entrance door as the hotel magazine suggested. 5
  • Executive chef Rogér Rassin makes haute cuisine approachable without sacrificing the sophisticated décor and impeccable service. 8
  • It was the Tripadvisor review, which sparked the involvement of the acting general manager and ultimately resulted in a points payout. It would be fair to say that our experience at the Amstel Hotel was a little mixed. Unfortunately, the service we received did not match the stunning location. 5
  • Moving fast, we followed the guest service assistant to a rather dated, but well-decorated lift. 5
  • After some rest I was enjoying Mr. Hans (who looks to be remembering me from my last stay in August) and Mr. Ted. Great service and cool experience, really nice dinner with red wine. 12
  • The building and facilities were top class, but unfortunately, some of the service (which is key to a hotel) did not match the 5* brand. 5
  • We have been staying at the Kimpton property since it was a Crowne Plaza and have stayed at the new Kimpton around 7 times. It's comprised of a combination of both old and new buildings and had been recently renovated. The service is top notch and the lobby bar is popular and buzzy. 25
  • Service is outstanding and the breakfast is even better. 14
  • Data from отзывы show a favorable rate for five-star stays, with guests praising the facilities and the staff. 20
  • The service is top notch and the lobby bar is popular and buzzy. The restaurant, the coffee shop and the bar are all decent and convenient. The staff is eager to please. 25
  • The hotel's quality is undoubtedly high: both the facilities and dining met my expectations, but the service had minor flaws: I had to confirm a late checkout in the morning, and breakfast was mistakenly added to the bill at checkout. 4
  • And the next morning I was in the good hands of Estelle and Lotte. Great service, enjoying some ducky race and... I even spotted a couple of swans. 12
  • While in its latest iteration the hotel has updated itself in all the right ways, it still offers each guest the superlative but understated service that such royals (of both state and silver screen) would expect, down to the private butler service that comes with each room. 9
  • Guests consistently praise this Intercontinental for its impeccable service, great amenities and historic, palatial interiors. 11
  • The lobby was quiet, with no other guests in sight. We were quickly invited to take a seat in front of the reception desk. I loved how personalized check-in felt and that we were able to sit down and relax during the process. 2
  • Grande dame, five-star service 3
  • building of such character. But the service was definitely not 5 star. 5
  • A small card with the following days weather and fun fact was left on the pillow as part of the daily turndown service, a nice touch that differentiates a luxury hotel. 28
  • @Harry T = the de Witt has been my go to hotel in AMS since around 2017. The staff are always lovely and I've always had excellent service there. And that was even before I had any IHG status. 24
  • She was very polite and apologetic and offered further assistance. She later rang to confirm a complimentary late check-out of 4:00 p.m., which we were very happy with. 5
  • Within 20 minutes of settling into the room, a woman from the front desk called to check in on us. I appreciated that they took the time to call to make sure everything was A-OK. 2
  • But if you can afford the splurge, you'll sleep in palatial grandeur and be served by über helpful staff at this five-star establishment. 9
  • There were plenty of toiletries provided and what stood out to us the most was the body scrub. We'd rather use a body scrub than those little body wash towels because it always feels like we're not getting a good scrub with them. 27
  • The check-in went very quick, smooth and with great care taken of the guest to feel at home. 13
  • Here is a review I wrote of Hotel Nadia, where the staff were very friendly: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/netherlands-reviews/hotel-nadia-recommendation-with-lots-of-caveats 14
  • The entire staff was very kind and helpful. 27
  • He approached a guest service assistant at reception to complain. She was very understanding and agreed that having advised us twice that we could order anything from the drinks menu, the server in the lounge had been wrong to withdraw the offer. 5
  • Maître Ronald Opten will bend over backwards to ensure that you enjoy the highest level of service, making any dinner here a special occasion. 8
  • The service was at a high level. You can tell the courteous legion of staff throughout the hotel have been highly trained. 22
  • keeping staff we came across were polite, courteous, and helpful. A lovely lady knocked on our door in the evening to offer the 'turn down' service. 5
Bathroom16 mentions
  • In the bath area, elite toiletries arrive in clearly labeled bottles; if you prefer scents from french origins, you can request them, or opt for unscented options. Seasonal notes may vary, but the quality remains consistently high. 20
  • The bathroom has a great bath, separate shower and amenities of Molton Brown. 13
  • As well as being a good size, the bathroom came with a good array of toiletries..... 1
  • The spacious bathroom was split into three areas; the main bath and sink area, a separate shower off to the left, and a toilet cubicle beyond the bath. 5
  • Another thing I appreciated was the dimmable light in the bathroom, which allowed for a more relaxing bath. 2
  • I did take a bath, and I used the loofah that was left alongside the soaps. I really liked the loofah. I almost took it home with me. 2
  • The bathroom was generously sized with a separate deep soaking bath and rain shower. 28
  • The bathroom was tastefully decorated with cream and beige square floor tiles matching similar colored wall tiles, topped part way up with an orange trim. 5
  • The bathrooms are outdated, clearly. It had everything you need - separate shower, a large bath, doors to the loo and shower - but it's not ideal. 24
  • The one tiny flaw I found in the room did happen to be in the bathroom. There was a crack in the toilet seat. 2
  • The white bath along the adjacent wall was of a good size and deep. 5
  • My room was HUGE, beautifully decorated, had a really nice bathroom, a canal view, and AC (which turned out to be unexpectedly needed...forecast before I left called for mid-60's, but it hit over 80° for a few days). 14
  • The bathtub was huge (the picture doesn't do it justice).... 1
  • Only real complaint was fairly weak shower pressure up on the 4th floor - is that usual? 12
View9 mentions
  • One thing that is worth mentioning is how well this hotel treats Intercontinental ambassadors. Both stays, I have booked the basic King room with a city view and been upgraded to a massive junior suite that overlooks the river (technically a two class upgrade, room category and view). 22
  • The view of the Intercontinental hotel overlooking the river is majestic. 5
  • The gym was small, but it had a good view overlooking the river. 5
  • The bar patio and Restaurant have an amazing view and overlook the Amstel River. 26
  • The river view is decent but nothing spectacular. 4
  • The hotel and the view were very photogenic. 5
  • BUT .... you can't disguise the tiny base level rooms or the fact that many overlook a hugely busy road. 23
  • Tell us about it below! You'll need deep pockets to stay at the Amstel, Amsterdam's landmark hotel that's overlooked the Amstel River since 1867, providing nightly luxury for royals and celebs from Queen Elizabeth II to Michael Jackson and The Rolling Stones. 9
  • To the left was the glass roof of the hotel lounge. We were privileged to overlook an everchanging scene by day and night. Rivercraft of all sizes passed by, as well as the hotel's own launches. 5

Personally, the location is just okay: it's on the outer ring of canals - quiet, but a bit far from the city centre and museums.
