The verdict

Who's travelling?

Pick a traveller type to re-weight the scores and re-rank the rooms around what you actually care about.

Read it your way

Hilton Garden Inn Minneapolis Downtown offers convenient downtown access near a park alongside appreciated perks like a light rail shuttle and cooked-to-order breakfast. Helpful front desk staff and dinner options like chicken sandwiches and garlic brie mashed potatoes stand out positively. However, guests frequently encounter room maintenance issues ranging from peeling baseboards and sagging beds to sporadic outages of air conditioning and hot water. 75

Every line below traces back to something a traveler actually wrote — open a line to read the original sentence and follow it to the source.

What travelers noticed

  • Guests frequently praise the on-site dining, particularly breakfast omelettes prepared by the chef and Belgian waffles on the buffet. 7
  • Front desk staff regularly receive high marks for kindness, and the hotel shuttle provides convenient access to the light rail. 7
  • Noise can be an issue, with reviewers reporting thin walls that let in neighbor alarms and street-facing rooms exposed to highway traffic. 85

The catch

  • The adjustable mattresses divide guests: some appreciate tailoring firmness to their liking, while others find the controls confusing or complain of sagging centers and mushy pillows. 7
  • Room quality varies widely, with some visitors noting clean spaces and dark wood laminate furniture, while others report peeling baseboards, unsecured dressers, or utility failures like missing air conditioning and hot water. 10

Who it's for

  • Guests relying on light rail transit
  • Travelers prioritizing made-to-order breakfast

Skip it if

  • Light sleepers sensitive to highway noise
  • Travelers expecting flawless room maintenance and updated fixtures

Bed & Sleep

  • When we finally went to sleep, the beds were amazing. While Karl likes sleeping on mattress as hard as a slab of concrete, I like pillow tops. We had the best of both worlds with the adjustable mattress. 7
  • (The softness of each side of the bed can be adjusted, but the system can be a bit confusing for some.) 10

  • It's usually more expensive than, say, a Hampton, but it doesn't offer me anything of significance to justify the price. There's one that I like in Denver, but that's purely because it's in easy walking distance of Union Station. 9

Room8 mentions
  • Never received a "your room is ready" notification, never received a digital key, had to ask for my water bottles, and I received a text asking, "How is your stay going?" at 10:15 p.m. when I was already in bed trying to fall asleep. 9
  • Lobby chandelier paper surrounds are torn and ragged. Our room on the 11th floor had baseboards peeling off the wall, decor was dark, bed was sagging in the middle. 5
  • Rooms are relatively spacious, each with a microwave, mini-fridge, and Keurig coffeemaker. 10
  • Sadly, the hotel had overbooked, and we were put in a regular king room. 7
  • Headboards and furniture are dark wood laminate, contrasting pleasantly with the bright white linens. 10
  • Room odors: Rooms can smell of lingering cigarette smoke. 8
  • Yeah, we just had a two night stay at Marquette Hotel downtown and were upgraded to a really nice corner room. 5
  • The furniture is not properly secured to the walls and my seven-year-old old was almost killed by a dresser falling over. 6
Value5 mentions
  • I've never found much reason to book with HGI. It's usually more expensive than, say, a Hampton, but it doesn't offer me anything of significance to justify the price. 9

  • I have had good success at the Hampton Inn Minnetonka but certain weeks, their rates just aren't justified. 5
  • It's usually more expensive than, say, a Hampton, but it doesn't offer me anything of significance to justify the price. There's one that I like in Denver, but that's purely because it's in easy walking distance of Union Station. 9
  • I looked at this one as I want to try that area but I felt the price was high for what it was, had the nearby Homewood booked for a while but ended up switching programs and trying a Bonvoy property not too far away. 5
Bed & Sleep2 mentions
  • When we finally went to sleep, the beds were amazing. While Karl likes sleeping on mattress as hard as a slab of concrete, I like pillow tops. We had the best of both worlds with the adjustable mattress. 7
  • (The softness of each side of the bed can be adjusted, but the system can be a bit confusing for some.) 10
Service7 mentions
  • Now, Minnesotans are known for being nice, but Hayley, the clerk at the front desk, with her kindness, generosity, and compassion transcended my definition of nice. 7
  • Pluses are: clean, location, kind staff, nice bathroom and comfortable room and bed. 5
  • One of my frequent stops while being a road warrior was a very well-run Hilton Garden Inn located at the convention center in Florence, SC. They always exceeded my expectations for service and hospitality, even during the COVID mess, and the property features several lovely outdoor spaces to relax. 9
  • Housekeeping was good. On arrival the room was dirty (toilet and shower wasn't fully cleaned). The next day the maid thoroughly fixed everything without our prompting. 5
  • WOW! The staff of the Hilton Garden Inn Minneapolis are the best. 7
  • Front desk staff was generally dismissive. Didn't offer a cookie at check-in. Had to ask twice and audibly sighed about it. 5
  • Head up to Abbott Northwestern Hospital using the hotel's shuttle service for hassle-free transit. 8
Noise3 mentions
  • The walls seem thin. We weren't very close to our neighbors due to being in the corner room but did hear the neighbor's alarm go off several times. 5
  • Air conditioning noise: Room units run loudly when operating. 8
  • Choose rooms not facing the street to reduce highway noise disruptions. 8
Location6 mentions
  • The location is convenient. 7
  • The neighborhood has every chain you can want. Independent Chinese restaurant in the strip mall behind the Doubletree was legit though. 5
  • The Lofton Tapestry is easily my favorite as it's in the best location and modern. 5
  • The hotel is located in a very nice area, next to a park. 7
  • The hotel is a couple blocks from a CVS, a Target, and a grocery store. Very convenient for all the things we lost in the laptop bag. 7
  • Location is ok, Hampton is cleaner, newer and better DT location IMO 6
Food5 mentions
  • Ok but did you try the restaurant? The bartender there is a super cool guy, ask him about his pictures 5
  • You're right about that Chinese food. It's legit 5
  • The dinner was delicious -- try the chicken sandwich and the garlic, brie mashed potatoes. 7
  • I'll still go, depending on specific property, but ending the free hot breakfast for Gold/Diamond also seems to have hurt the restaurants too. See a lot less customers in the morning. 9
  • The next morning, Mars, the breakfast chef, made for us the most amazing omelettes. The breakfast buffet had Belgian waffles! I ate too much, but it was delicious. 7
