The verdict

Who's travelling?

Pick a traveller type to re-weight the scores and re-rank the rooms around what you actually care about.

Read it your way

Housed in a refurbished 19th-century tobacco company building, Hotel 1898 sits right on bustling La Rambla in the heart of Barcelona. Guests enjoy stately colonial-style decor, an expansive breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelets, and 360-degree panoramas from the rooftop bar La Isabella. However, lower-level rooms at the back face another hotel with obstructed views, and reception staff can occasionally be abrupt. 510133

  • Reviewers frequently highlight the large breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelets, as well as comfortable king-size beds with crisp linens. 313

The catch

  • While the rooftop bar delivers expansive city panoramas, lower-level rooms facing the back look directly into another building with heavily obstructed views. drawn from the full read

Bathroom

read from 1 source · Deep coverage
  • Hotels with bathtubs are a huge highlight for me so I was delighted to find a tub in the bright bathroom along with large bottles of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner that are kinder on the planet than those tiny minis most hotels still give out. 6
  • The marbled bathroom was spacious and offered a wide selection of toiletries, and premium bottled water was supplied each day. 3

Food

  • The buffet breakfast is also one of the best we have come across. 15
  • La Isabela is the perfect spot for a happy hour spritz and snack, with a limited but tasty tapas menu (the croquettes are not to be missed). 14

Location

  • The location of Hotel 1898 is also unbeatable and allows you to see much of the city on foot. 6
  • Hotel 1898, overlooking Barcelona's Las Ramblas should be noisy and crowded thanks to its prime location, but in reality, it's a peaceful haven right in the centre of the city and one that provides a welcome escape from the bustle just outside. 6

Noise

  • And although one might think the noise from such a melee may interfere with restful slumber, I didn't hear a thing from my well-insulated room. 3
  • I slept quite soundly and the noise didn't bother me. My husband was up a little later and told me it was crazy and loud out on La Ramblas. 13

Room

  • With crisp white linens and a demure colour palate my room came with balcony views of La Rambla and a vastly comfortable king-size bed. 3
  • I chose a 'Privilege' room for my three-night stay. It was large, quiet and featured a huge bed that would have fit four and there was also a small balcony overlooking a little slither of Las Ramblas and the hotel's main entrance on Carrer del Pintor Fortuny. 6

Service

  • Set on La Rambla, locations don't get much more central than this. You'll find shopping, markets, and Modernist buildings nearby 5
  • The location of Hotel 1898 is also unbeatable and allows you to see much of the city on foot. 6
  • H1898 is located on the central La Rambla promenade, and in walking distance to many famous city destinations, including the iconic food hall La Boqueria and the Gran Teatre del Liceu. This is very convenient for sightseeing, although the downside of being within walking distance to tourist attractions is that you are inevitably staying in a crowded area. 14

  • La Isabela is the perfect spot for a happy hour spritz and snack, with a limited but tasty tapas menu (the croquettes are not to be missed). 14
  • La Isabella Terrace near the rooftop pool was my favourite spot for lunch, they do a fab range of snacks, light lunches and some brilliant cocktails. 6
  • Although the rooms are not the biggest, Hotel 1898 didn't earn its reputation as one of the finest spots in Barcelona for nothing and there's a touch of class about each suite as well of course as standard four-star amenities, such as WiFi, and several first-rate bars and restaurants, which offer a seasonal tapas menu. 16
  • Unfortunately we were hurried and couldn't take advantage of everything that was offered. There was a large buffet and you could also order omelets etc. If you have time to relax and eat a ton, I'd recommend it. 13
  • Offering a sumptuous breakfast buffet with everything from fresh fruit and pancakes to cold meats, sweet treats, and hot favourites, the hotel caters to every taste. 3

  • It's in a great location, on the corner of La Ramblas. We had a room with a view on the side street, which was small but clean and well set up. 13
  • Drawing on its august heritage, the decor throughout the property is one of stately elegance. 15
  • Monumental hotel along the Ramblas in El Raval. The decor is particularly elegant, with lots of wood and classic colours. 11
